Horseshoe Crab's Crown

Written and Imagined by Heather Feather

Illustrated by Valentina Gallup Salerni

The timeless story of Horseshoe Crab was written for children ages 1-100 and was made possible through the generous Queens Art Fund Grant.  Horseshoe Crab’s Crown, takes a fascinating local creature, and uses her as a teaching tool to connect children to their local ecosystem. The story takes place in Jamaica Bay, one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, surrounded by one of the most diverse cities in the world.  It highlights the horseshoe crab, a 450 million year old organism, whose mere presence supports a large number of animals who thrive in this estuary ecosystem.

This is a tale of “re”-creation, and the adaptations that helped the horseshoe crab survive the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. All the while, she searches the ocean floor for survivors, only to offer refuge to her new friends on the back of her hard shell.  The story will educate readers, while taking them on a journey of Jamaica Bay inhabitants, and emphasizing the importance of community and friendship therein.
